How to Prepare for a Photoshoot

Prepare for a photoshoot

You won’t have to prepare much for your photoshoot - this whole thing will be easy 👍 But we want to make sure you have your best foot put forward. So we’ve outlined a few things you’ll want to know.

Photoshoot preparation checklist
In this checklist we've outlined the most important things to remember. Although having fun on the day beats them all :)

The night before
Have a full night's sleep the night before. Those bags under the eyes after a shameless night out would love the chance to spoil your pics, but we won’t let them!

What to bring to your photoshoot
Although it's optional, you’ll want to bring along 4-5 tops to change into.

What not to bring to your photoshoot
You’ll want to keep things light on this one. Try to leave the following at home:

  • Pets

  • Bicycles

  • Children & babies

  • Headphones

  • Chewing gum

  • Cigarettes

  • Snacks

What to wear to your photoshoot
You’ll be fine wearing casual and comfortable clothes. This can mean different things for everybody but an informal approach usually works best. Plain t-shirts, summer jackets, jumpers, shirts etc. Blazers are great! even if they are not with a shirt.

Greens and browns also work great against some of the wooded areas you will be visiting. Try not to stuff your pockets with anything to avoid bulging.

V neck tops are really good for bringing out chest definition on males. I also would not go with shorts unless they are low cuts.

Where can I change my tops?
Most people like to wear a neutral thin top as a first layer so they can quickly put different tops over it without having to worry about finding a changing spot. Although if needed there will still be a few secluded areas for changing along the way.

Can I bring a full clothing change, like a suit?
Full clothing changes are possible, bear in mind you’ll typically have a 45min shoot so full clothing changes and finding changing rooms will substantially reduce your photo count. You always have the option to extend your shoot using the Extra Time Add-on on the pricing page if required.

What not to wear to your photoshoot

Try to leave the following behind:

  • Clothes with big bright lettering, political messaging or imagery

  • Clothes that use excessive animal fur

  • Bright white clothes (cream is okay, try to avoid any plain white tops or shirts)

  • Neon clothing

  • Bright red clothing

  • Very high heels

  • Overly formal (tux, three piece suit etc)

Your clothing/accessories can help to accentuate a look or style but should not be so loud that they’re a distraction. Find out more on this in our worst photos article

Grooming
There are no real rules here other than what you believe to be a presentable look.

Will I get direction at my photoshoot?
Your photographer will give you full instructions and ideas on how to stand and how to move while you are getting photographed. If you want an introduction to some of those ideas check out our articles on posing for pictures.
